Time for a new bed?

Monday, December 15th, 2008

You know it’s time for a new mattress when you look at the old one and notice a peak that seems to have formed between you and your partner. No wonder you keep rolling to the side, the mattress is sloped like a mountain. Add to that a headboard that keeps threatening to come loose and you are looking at a total bedroom makeover. The choice in mattresses, orthapedic mattresses, beds, tempurpedic beds and bed frames has never been greater. For a long time, pillow top mattresses were seen as the way to go, but the pillow top gets pushed out of shape and uncomfortable long before the rest of the mattress is ready to be replaced. If you really need the pillow top, then it’s better to get a standard mattress and add a replaceable pillow top. Memory foam mattresses are also increasingly popular, but the price puts them out of reach of most of us. After some research and a visit to our nearest bed store, we decided to go with a platform bed (no box spring required, which means we don’t have to maneuver one up our historic narrow stairway) and a foam core mattress. For some reason, this seemed to satisfy both of us, even though we have very different tastes when it comes to mattress firmness. The cat is also happy because he doesn’t have to jump as high to get on the bed. The price was OK. More than we wanted to spend, but not as much as we feared we would have to.

While you are trying out new beds keep your options open and try a multitude of materials and makes, don’t settle for second best.
